Let all the trees of the forest sing a glad hymn

This is a day of joy! At Christ’s Resurrection death disappeared, and life was seen in all its splendour. Adam, who rises again, exults with joy. Let us, therefore, rejoice and sing our hymn of triumph.

The day for the adoration of the precious Cross has arrived. Come, all ye faithful! It is exposed before us, and it sends forth the bright rays of Christ’s Resurrection. Filled, therefore, with spiritual joy, let us embrace and kiss it.

O Cross of my Lord, thy glory is immense! Show me now the divine face of thy beauty. Vouchsafe that I who venerate thee may sing thy praises. I speak with thee as though thou wert a living thing, and I embrace thee.

Let heaven and earth unite in singing its praise, for the most holy Cross is shown to all, the Cross on which Christ was fastened and sacrificed. Let us joyfully approach and kiss it.

The saintly Moses of old prefigured thy Cross, O Christ, when, dividing the waters with his rod, he led the Israelite people through the Red Sea, and sang a canticle of praise to thee in celebration of the going forth from Egypt.

Thy Cross, O Lord, which we kiss to-day, was prefigured by Moses, when he stretched forth his arms; by it, we put our spiritual Amalec to flight; by it also we are saved.

To-day there is joy in heaven and on earth, because there shines upon the world the sign of the thrice blessed Cross. Its sight is a source of unceasing grace to us.

What return shall we make to thee, O Christ, for thy having permitted us to adore thy venerable Cross, on which thy most holy Blood was shed, and to which thy Flesh was fastened with nails? We kiss it and give thee thanks.

The angelic hosts exult with joy because of the adoration of thy Cross; for on it, O Christ, thou didst wound the demon troop and save mankind.

The Church has been made a second Paradise, which, like the first, possesses a Tree of Life—thy Cross, O Lord—by whose contact we are made immortal.

The prophecy of the Psalmist is fulfilled: for lo! we adore the footstool of thy divine feet, thy venerable Cross, the much loved Wood.

The Wood which Jeremias saw put in thy bread is thy Cross, O merciful Redeemer! We kiss it, and honour thy chains, and tomb, and spear, and nails.

On this day a sweet odour is exhaled from the thurible of heaven—the Cross, perfumed with a life-giving ointment. Let us inhale this fragrance of heaven; let us ever venerate it with faith.

Tell us, O Eliseus! what is the wood thou didst put in the water? It is the Cross of Christ, which drew us from the depths of spiritual death. Let us ever venerate it with faith.

Jacob prefigured thy Cross of old, O Christ, when he adored the top of Joseph’s mysterious rod. He foresaw that it was to be the venerable sceptre of thy kingdom. Let us now adore it with ever faithful hearts.

The great prophet Daniel, when cast into the lions’ den, stretched forth his hands in the form of a Cross; he was saved from the jaws of the wild beasts, and for ever blessed Christ our God.

Let all the trees of the forest sing a glad hymn, for on this day they beheld one of themselves, the Tree of the Cross, being honoured with kisses and embraces. This is the Tree whose head was lifted up by Christ, as holy David foretold.

I, whose death was caused by a tree, have found thee, O Tree of Life, O Cross that bearest Christ! Thou art my invincible defence, my power protecting me against Satan. I venerate thee this day, and exclaim: ‘Sanctify me by thy glory!’

Rejoice and be glad, O Church of God, that adorest this day the thrice blessed Wood of the most holy Cross, round which the very angels stand ministering in awe.

Sunday Evening As this day comes to a close I gratefully acknowledge your goodness and mercy, in granting me the privilege of hearing your word, the glorious Gospel of the salvation of the world.   your promises enable me to look up with confidence and forward with courage.  Bless the labors of my hands, give me understanding in my duties and tasks.  Enriched my week with blessings of your bountiful hands.  Grant me the grace to live daily in your presence, doing things pleasing to You and helpful to my companions along the way.

Monday Morning Gracious God, heavenly Father, I thank You for your mercy, which has kept me from all harm and danger in the darkness of the night now passed.  Banish also the darkness of sin from my life by your forgiveness for Jesus, my Savior’s sake.

Monday Evening O God of love and grace, in this evening hour I humbly pray You to forgive me for Jesus’ sake for all that was wrong in my life today.  I confess that at times I find myself doing what I do not want to do and sometimes not doing what I know I should do.  Have mercy on me.  Send your Holy Spirit into my heart that I may grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ my Savior.

Tuesday Morning Heavenly Father, your will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.  Grant that your will may be done in the hearts and lives of people everywhere.  Grant me grace to be ever aware of your will and submit to You in all things.  Give me faithfulness in my work, and crown my labors with your blessing.

Tuesday Evening Dear father in Heaven, I thank You for your care and protection for the health and strength necessary for the work of this day and for the answers to my prayers and the prayers of Christians everywhere.  Be with me also this night and keep me from all harm and danger.  Forgive my sins and assure me of your abiding grace and mercy.  Keep people who are near and dear to me in your merciful care.  Give me a quiet and restful sleep, and thereby prepared for the task of another day.

Wednesday Morning Lord Jesus, who is my ever-living and ever loving Savior, I thank You that You neither slumber nor sleep, but protect me by the mighty hand through this night.  Open my eyes to see the blessings You have prepared for me this day: for the love of friends which will enrich me, I thank you.  For the ability to work and serve others, I give You praise.  For the gifts to be granted to me this day, I honor you.

Wednesday Evening At the end of another day, dear heavenly Father, I praise You for your goodness and adore You for your mercy.   You would have not left me or forsaken me, as You have ever promised.  But I have failed You and forsaken You by sin, and I asked You for the sake of your Son and my redeemer to cleanse me from all my sins.  From the rising of the sun in the shadows of this night, You have been with me to bless, help, guide, strengthen and comfort me.  I am not worthy of the least of these mercies and all the truth which You have shown to me, your servant.  I thank you, Father.

Thursday Morning Another day is dawning; dear Master, let it be, On earth or else in heaven; another day for You.  Gracious Father in Heaven I know not when You will call me home for in the midst of life we are in death.  Regardless of the number of my days on earth, cause me always to be prepared to answer your summons.  I know that the road of my life leads finally to your heavenly mansions above.  Equip me for the trials and pitfalls that beset my way through life and teach me to perform, in your holy Name, each duty which confronts me.  Remind me daily that I am a pilgrim without a continuing city here and help me to assist my fellow travelers by sharing their burdens and showing them the glory of life in you.

Thursday Evening As this day closes, dear heavenly father, I come to thank You for your unfailing love which even during the darkness of the night continues to shine upon me and those whom I love.  The wrongs and mistakes that have marred my life again today show me plainly how much I need You in my everyday life.  Pardon me for Jesus sake, and take away every impure thought and wish, make my heart right and make my actions reflect your love.  I want to become more like Jesus, who went about doing good.  Heal the sick, relieve the suffering, strengthen the weak, recall the erring, curb the wicked, help the troubled, comfort the sorrowing, and give peace to the dying.  O You who does not sleep, keep me safe till morning comes again.

Friday Morning Almighty God and Father, the light of day summons me to the duties and privileges of the stewardship of Life.  Help me to be a good steward by revealing to me your will for my life.  May I make the best use of the talents would You have given to me, so that I may always be ready to give an account of my stewardship.

Friday Evening Oh Lord God, I thank You that the knowledge of your presence kept me from gross sin today.  Make me more gracious in dealing with my others and more zealous in performing the duties of my calling.  Oh Lord, I need your presence every passing hour; what about by grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who like your self, my guide and stay can be? Through clouds and sunshine, abide with me.

Saturday Morning Oh Lord You have searched me and know me You know my sitting down and my standing up.   You know my thoughts from afar.  There is not a word on my tongue but You oh Lord have known all together.  As I begin a new day with you, search my heart, dear Lord, and purify my affections so that I may love only those things would You please you, and put You first in all things.

Saturday Evening Lord Jesus Christ, author and Perfecter of the faith, I give You thanks for having brought me safely to the end of another week of my earthly pilgrimage.  Praise and thanks be to You for having earned the perfect salvation for me, for bringing me to faith in You through the Gospel, and for having kept me in the true faith up to this moment.  Keep me in my baptism so that I may, at the end of my pilgrimage rejoice with all the saints over the wonders of your eternal love.

Sunday Morning Lord God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, grant your sanctifying presents as I join my fellow Christians on this day in worshipping You in the beauty of Holiness.  Lord I have loved the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.  How amiable are your Tabernacles oh lord of hosts.  My soul Longs, yes even faints, for the courts of the Lord, my heart and flesh cry out for the Living God.  A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.  I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

Week

Sunday Evening Heavenly Father, at the close of another day dedicated to you, I come before You with my evening sacrifice of prayer and praise.  I ask You that the blessings of this day–the hearing of your word, the singing of your praise, feeling your presence, and enjoying the fellowship of Christian people–may go with me in the week that lies ahead.  Like this day of rest, so also let my days of toil be consecrated to you.

Monday Morning Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for having kept me safe during the night.  Now I pause at the gateway of another week to ask You to go with me again.  I do not know what this week holds in store–pain or pleasure, health or sickness, sunshine or shadow.  However, I am not afraid if You will be my companion.

Monday Evening As evening comes, I thank You heavenly father–who did create the day and night–for the health and protection You have given me this day.  I do not deserve even the least of your blessings.  But for Jesus sake forgive my sins and shortcomings, particularly if I have offended a weak soul, or if I have neglected the opportunity to lead someone to you.  Grant me your Spirit’s power to grow in faith.

Tuesday Morning Lord God, at the beginning of this new day I ask You for the gift of your spirit and the gift of a bright Soul.  As You have granted me protection from all dangers in the night, be merciful to me and continue through the day to guard and keep me from every evil of body and soul.

Tuesday Evening Lord Jesus, who welcomes all who come to you, I lay before You the burden of my sin and ask You for your pardon.  I have not done this day what was my duty to do, and I confess my sins to You alone.  I pray You to remember them no more.  Help me to be stronger because of your forgiveness, happier because of your mercy, and more willing to serve because of your great love.

Wednesday Morning Unto You O Lord, do I lift up my heart in this morning hour, sincerely grateful for the opportunities of another day.  Bless me and what I do today, that all may be acceptable to you.  Grant me success in my work that You know to be best for me.  Keep me always mindful that all depends on my possessing your abundant grace and blessing.

Wednesday Evening Heavenly Father, I thank You for the privilege of speaking to You in prayer.  It is good to know that I may come to you–the almighty creator of all things in heaven and on Earth–my heavenly Father for Jesus sake.  Give me the faith of a loving child, never doubting that You will always hear my prayer.  If sometimes You don’t answer my prayers exactly as I have asked, but let me have the childlike faith to believe that you, Heavenly Father know best, what to give me and what to withhold.

Thursday Morning Dear heavenly Father, forgive me my sins and help me, in gratitude to You to forgive those who sin against me.  O Lord, my heart is proud and unforgiving.  It is hard for me to confess my sins, even to you.  Help me to see clearly that I offend You daily and that indeed I deserve nothing but punishment.  Help me to acknowledge freely that I am worthy of these things for which I pray.  Help me pray with the tax collector, “God be merciful to me, a sinner.”

Thursday Evening Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, tonight I bring the needs of the church before you.  I thank You for all Christian churches and schools, for the teaching the gospel near and far, for the messengers of peace who carry your word to mansions and cottages, to children and to higher schools of learning, to people all races, far and near, to rich and poor alike.  Give every member of your church the fire of your Holy Spirit, Lord Jesus, that all may speak the things which they know in their hearts.

Friday Morning Gracious Lord and adorable Savior, in this morning hour I praise You who has redeemed me through the sacrifice on Calvary.   You purchase me to be your own.  Grant that I may serve You with a willing heart and untiring devotion to show my appreciation and love.

Friday Evening Lord, with a grateful heart I come into your presence in this evening hour, mindful of your many mercies which have enriched my day.   You have forgiven me all my sins, comforted me in all my disappointments, calmed me when irritated, and strengthen me in the face of temptations and doubt.

Saturday Morning Lord Jesus Christ, Sun of righteousness, shine in my heart and life today.  Help me to reflect your light, that someone who does not yet know You as Lord and Savior may be directed toward you.  I thank You that You have borne the guilt of my sin.  Let the sin and evil that may threaten me today have no power.  Grant me grace to recognize your will and the faith to do it.

Saturday Evening At the close of another week, O gracious God, I thank You that You have kept me from harm and danger of body and soul.  I am grateful too, that You have blessed the labor of my hands.  I’m not worthy of all the goodness and mercy You have shown, but continue to bless me in body and soul toward my good, as You always have.

Sunday Morning Lord God, merciful Father, I praise You for the light of this day, when by your spirit You shine in my heart to the preaching and teaching of your gospel.  Open my eyes that I may see the wondrous truths of your salvation and find a new strength in hope in your promises.  Bless the preaching and teaching of your word throughout all of your church, and cause your gospel to fall as good seed on good ground and bear abundant fruit.  Give power and convictions to your ministers that their testimony to your holiness and grace may ring clear and true to your revealed word.

Sunday Evening Keep me from all wicked and evil dreams, from restless wakings and useless anxieties, from depraved and hurtful thoughts, from all grief.  My Lord and God, into your gracious care do I commend my body and soul, my brothers and sisters, and all my kin and loved ones.  May it please You, O Lord, to save us, and turn not your mercy from us.  May your grace and fidelity protect us alway.  Cover us this night with your goodness, and encompass us with your mercy, that we be safe-guarded in body and soul.  Amen.  Our Father….

Monday Morning Defend me against mine enemies that neither secretly nor openly they harm or injure me with their craft and cunning, violence or malice.  O God, Father and Lord of my life, shield me from all impurity and disorderly conduct.  Keep me from all intemperance and unchastity, and turn from me shameless thoughts.  Help me by your grace to pluck out the eye that offends me and cast it away, and renounce all wicked and impure desires of the heart.  Amen.  Our Father…

Monday Evening Almighty God, at the close of another day I give thanks for your great grace.   Created grace in the world you have made, and all that you have put into it.  Imputed grace, in the forgiveness that is for us in Christ Jesus.  And sanctifying grace, in the things of Christian life: prayer, music, and scripture.  Make me ever mindful of your lavish grace toward me.  Amen.  Our Father….

Tuesday Morning. Open You my ears that I may hear your holy Word with a believing heart and keep the same in my memory.  Let my ears incline to the entreaties and prayers of the needy, not to forsake them in their distress.  And when in my distress I cry unto You, hear You the voice of my supplications, and despise not my sighings in the hour of death.  Let my prayers come before You early.  Incline Thine ears to my entreaties.  Satisfy us early with your mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.  Amen.  Our Father….

Tuesday Evening. Awake us again in due time, and make us to hear joy and peace, for we love your word and your testimonies, which are the delight of our souls.  May our ears be saved from all messages of sorrow, and all anguish be turned from our souls; for You  prosper all that live, and fill my life with your blessing; in Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.  Amen.  Our Father…

Wednesday Morning Keep my tongue from evil, and my lips from speaking guile.  Foolish talking or jesting, unbecoming of Christians, be ever far removed from me.  Grant, that I offend none with my lips, nor backbite, judge nor condemn, defame nor vilify.  O that I might put a lock to my lips and seal them with a strong seal, that they bring me not to naught, nor my tongue destroy me.  Give me grace that I may know my shortcomings and correct them, and not fall into your righteous judgment and condemnation.  Grant my prayer, O Eternal God, for the sake of your dear Son, Jesus Christ.  Amen.  Our Father….

Wednesday Evening The Lord bless me and keep me.  The Lord make His face shine upon me and be gracious unto me.  The Lord lift up His countenance upon me and give me peace.  The protection and blessing of the one and eternal Godhead be between me and all mine enemies, visible and invisible, today and always, that they may not approach nor injure me.  Amen.  Our Father…

Thursday Morning Protect me in body and soul, that no evil befall me and no plague come nigh unto my dwelling.  Keep from me all wicked spirits.  Defend me from evildoers.  Stand up for me against the workers of iniquity and shield me, that the hands of mine adversaries may not touch me.  O Lord, our God, establish You the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish You it, and strengthen our hands, and teach us that we may keep your commandments and sin not against You this day.  Grant us this for the sake of your mercy, which endureth for ever and ever.  Amen.  Our Father….

Thursday Evening I remember You on my bed, and meditate on You in the night watches, because You have been my help.  Therefore in the shadow of your wings will I rejoice.  My soul cleaves unto You, for your right hand defends me.  When darkness comes over me, then Thou, O Lord, art my light and my salvation.  O gracious God, vouchsafe unto me your grace, so that when that last hour cometh, and I lay me down on my deathbed for the eternal rest, through your help, in the true faith, in all confidence and trust, I may happily fall asleep for the eternal life.  Amen.  Our Father…

Friday Morning O Lord God, do You with me as You wilt: for You knowest what serves best your glory and my salvation.  Keep me in your fear and in the true knowledge of You.  Protect me from the deeds of unrighteousness.  And if by chance and by reason of my frailty I sin against You, I pray You take not from me your mercy; turn not from me your grace; withdraw not your help.  For there is none other God nor Helper but You, and as there is none before You, there is none after You.  You art the first and the last, Alpha and Omega, and there is none other God beside You.  Amen.  Our Father…

Friday Evening Be You my shield, and my shade upon my right hand.  O Lord, preserve me from all evil, preserve my soul.  Be gracious unto me, for in You do I put my trust.  I trust in the Lord, and cry to God, the Highest, to God Who endeth all mine affliction.  Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.  He will guide my steps on the paths of righteousness, that I slip not and my feet do not falter.  He will not suffer my feet to be moved, and His word is a light unto my path.  Amen.  Our Father…

Saturday Morning Grant, that I may fulfill the duties of my calling and all that is committed unto me with diligence and trust to the glory of your name and the betterment of my fellowman, so that I may not misuse the light of this day, neither any of your creatures in the service of sin and vanity, neither grieve You, nor transgress the covenant of my Baptism with anything I do or leave undone.  Vouchsafe unto me your grace, that I may guard myself against the six things which You dost hate, yea, seven which are an abomination unto Thee: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.  From such and the like vices preserve me, Amen.  Our Father…

Saturday Evening For the days of my life will appear as noonday, and darkness as the morning’s light, and I will rejoice that Thou, O God, art my hope and my rest in life and death.  I lay me down, and none will terrify me.  Thus do I commend my body and soul into your hands, You Faithful God.  You have redeemed me through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.  Our Father…

Sunday Morning Behold, O God, I consecrate and dedicate myself entirely to your holy will, with body and soul, all my powers and abilities, inwardly and outwardly.  Make me a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto You, so that I may render You a reasonable and pleasing service.  Therefore, Most Holy Father, Almighty God, let me be wholly Thine.  Govern You my heart and soul, and all my emotions that I know and understand none but You.  O Lord, in the morning wilt You hear my voice.  Early will I seek You and look up to You.  Early will I praise You, and will not cease when evening comes.  Through Jesus Christ.  Amen.   Our Father….

Week 13, from Habermann

Sunday Evening Hide me in your pavilion in the time of trouble, in the secret of your tabernacle hide me, set me upon the rock, and I will fear no evil.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for You art with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.  Grant me grace, that though my body sleep, my soul may ever wake for You, that I may ever have You in my heart and before my mind, and be not overcome by the night of sin.  Amen.  Our Father…

Monday Morning Grant whatever is pleasing to You and useful to me, that I may serve You in the true faith.  Look upon me with the eyes of your mercy, You Savior of the world, and enlighten my heart and eyes, that I may walk in the light of your grace, which rises above me, and never lose You, the Eternal Light.  Amen.  Amen.  Our Father…

Monday Evening Mighty are You, O Lord our God.  The heavens were forged at your speakings, and the vast universe at the command of your voice.  Beyond all stars, You have shown forth your power, and yet You still care for the sparrow and the fading grass.  What are mankind?  That You are mindful of us?  You deign to call us children, and so we will call You, “Father.”  Amen.  Our Father…

Tuesday Morning Father, as all the people that I will meet this day are your children, help me to recognize my brothers and sisters.  Those who are lazy, foolish, and cruel were not made so by You, at their birth.  But, they have lost their way in a world that is dark.  Help me to keep to your path, and to help whom I may and pity whom I cannot.  Amen.  Our Father…

Tuesday Evening Today, I have known your love.   In the food which sustained me, the home which holds me, and in the people who know me, You have shown love.  Help me, dear Father, to recognize my many blessings, and the great depth of your love for me, in Christ Jesus.  Amen.  Our Father…

Wednesday Morning Shepherd of the sheep, in your great love, lead me to good things: green pasture and still waters, that I cannot find of myself.   When I wander, lead me back.  Teach my to take comfort, even in your disciplining rod and staff.  Which, though they chasten me, yet are for my benefit, because my heart is prone to wander.  Amen.  Our Father…

Wednesday Evening As the pillar of the cloud went between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel, so that they could not come together, and no harm befall the children of Israel, so mayest You be a pillar of fire and a wall of separation between me and mine enemies, that no harm come over me.  Keep me also in my last hour.  When mine eyes no longer see, mine ears no longer hear, my tongue no longer speak, be You with me, O blessed Trinity, that the Evil One have no power over me.  Amen.  Amen.  Our Father…

Thursday Morning Great is the Creator of earth and heaven, sea and sky, wind and flame.  In delicate balance, He preserves the world.  Lord God, as You made Adam to tend and keep the garden, open my eyes to your world, and lead me to keep well what You have given.   As the earth bears the burden of the sins of man, by your grace, make me  a good steward of your creation and creatures, a binder of the broken and healer of the sick.   Amen.  Our Father…

Thursday Evening Keep me in You, that I may ever watch and pass my days in all sobriety and moderation, and be found in Christian readiness, since I can not know the hour when You comest, O God, to call me hence, so that I may be worthy to stand before the Son of Man, and be not put to shame; who liveth and reigneth with You and the Holy Ghost, world without end.  Amen.  Amen.  Our Father…

Friday Morning Your mercies are new again today.  Though I have sinned much, and done nothing that deserves the sacrifice of Christ, yet You preserve my life.  Yet, You are a forgiver of transgressions, and a justifier of the ungodly.  As my sins grieve your heart, teach me to truly repent.  To turn from sin, and to follow you.   Amen.  Our Father…

Friday Evening Almighty and everlasting God, as You said to Adam that it was not good to be alone, I give you thanks for all those who know me and love me.  Soothe the calluses of my heart, that I be neither gruff to the people you have put in my life, nor unthankful for your gifts.  Soften my heart toward others.   Give me compassion and fellowship.  That even in imperfect people, and none more than me, I may know fellowship and friendship, as gifts of your hand. Amen.  Our Father…

Saturday Morning As another week closes, I give thanks for my work.   As You were pleased to work in the Creation, so no work is shameful to human industry.   Give me honest pride in good work.   Preserve me from laziness, arrogance, and false-measure.   Remind me that good work is acceptable to You, who did first make the world.  Amen.  Our Father…

Saturday Evening I seek the Lord in the time of need; my hand is outstretched in the night without ceasing; for my soul has none other comfort; and I know of none other helper in heaven or earth but You alone.  At midnight when I awaken, I meditate upon your name, so altogether lovely, upon your goodness and fidelity, vouchsafed unto me, and I praise You because of your righteous judgments.  When I am troubled I remember God, when my spirit is overwhelmed I speak of my Savior.  For He redeemeth my life from destruction and saveth me from the snares of death.  Amen.  Our Father…

Saturday Morning Having worked this week, give me good rest on your Sabbath.  Give rest to my mind and body, and in the hearing of your Word, give solace to my soul.  As a ship to the harbor, and a wolf to its den, draw me back to the House of the Lord my God.  Let me stand among the assembly of believers and praise the Maker of my soul and body, world and words.  Let my testify to you glory and give the praise due your Name.   Amen.  Our Father…

Sunday Evening Eternal Father, prepare my soul to meet You in the Divine Service.   In the invocation of your Name, remind me where I received mine.  In the confession, give me true repentance to follow You better.  In absolution, give me faith to believe your promises.   In the reading of your Word, divide the confusion of my mind.  In the oblation of the altar, accept me at your table.    Amen.  Our Father…

Monday Morning   O Lord, heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with your mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that , being ordered by your governance, we may do always what is righteous in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.  Our Father….

Wednesday Morning Almighty God, before all worlds, before time itself, You were.  O Ancient of Days, make new again your mercies.  Preserve, again today, all that you have made.  In every place that I go, You were first there.  Everything that I touch and see was first formed at your word.  In your imagination exist all eventualities, every twist of time.  You are vast beyond our imagining.  And yet you speak so that we understand.  You became man that we could see.  And You continue to send pastors, as You sent the prophets of old, that we might understand.  As children, give us minds to wonder all that You are and all that You have done.  Amen.  Our Father…

WednesdayEvening  Almighty, everlasting God, let our prayer in your sight be as incense, the lifting up of our hands as the evening sacrifice.  Give us grace to behold you, present in your Word and Sacraments, and to recognize You in the lives of those around us.  Stir up in us the flame of that love which burned in the heart of your Son as he bore his passion, and let it burn in us to eternal life and to the ages of ages.  Amen.  Our Father….

Thursday Morning God of power and might, in your vast glory, we are less than the ants of the sand.  Yet, You have loved us with a love beyond that of the maker.  You have called us sons and daughters.   As You have loved us in our adoption, love us still.  Swallow us in your immense heart.  Consume us in the depths of your Spirit.  Give us, small as we are, the grace to know that in You, we live and move and have our whole being.  Amen.  Our Father…

Thursday Evening   Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know You as You are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread.  Grant this for the sake of your love.  Amen.  Our Father….

Friday Morning O Lord Jesus Christ, who by your death did take away the sting of death: Grant to your servants so to follow in faith where You have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you, and wake up to your likeness; for your tender mercies’ sake.  Amen.  Our Father….

Friday Evening O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.  Then in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last.  Amen.  Our Father….

Saturday Morning Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.  Our Father….

Saturday Evening O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, .Amen.  Our Father….

Sunday Morning Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.  As I join with the faithful to offer praise in your assembly and receive from your hand double, forgive my sins and soften my heart that I may be acceptable to you.  Amen.  Our Father….

Week D [Advent 1]

Sunday Evening     Again, Mighty God, You have given another day of worship in which your truth was spoken, your people gathered, and your Church shown forth in the power made perfect in weakness. And in such power, You have been pleased to give grace to even one like me.  Though this is truth beyond my knowing, I give You praise for this wonder.   Amen.  Our Father…

Monday Morning As You have raised up a Shoot from the stump of Jesse and a Branch for David, Jesus Christ, who is the tree of eternal life whose fruits of body and blood rescue from everlasting death.  Into this tree, graft me in.  Keep my life in Thee.  That as power and grace flow through You, in a small way, make them flow through me.   Amen.  Our Father…

Monday Evening    Stir up your power, O Lord, and come quickly on the earth.  There are many innocents in need of rescue and many evil men in need of punishment.   Stir up your power, and bring justice to the earth.  Bring mercy to those who wait for You.  Come quickly, Lord Jesus.   Amen.  Our Father…

Tuesday Morning Stir up your power, O Lord, and come into my heart.   In me there is much darkness and little strength, but by your love, remake me heart.  Not of stone, but of living flesh, filled with the life that comes from your Son.   Amen.  Our Father…

Tuesday Evening  The night is again far gone, and the day is spent.  Give me the strength and the discernment to throw away the works of darkness, and fill my soul with your light.  For in your light alone, can we see light.  The night is dark, but keep me awake, and fill my eyes with Thee.   Amen.  Our Father…

Wednesday Morning Lord God, You bless the people of Jerusalem with the sight of your entry into the city.  Yet, You have blessed me with such too.  Give me appreciation for what I see in your church.   Give me a heart which recognizes what I see: your Word in my Preacher, your Blood in our cup, your Body in our bread, your People in my congregation.   Amen.  Our Father…

Wednesday Evening  Lord God, the world is so disordered, and my soul is too.  But I await a King who will put the world right.  Who will put my soul aright.  Give me faith to wait for him.  Give me hope to trust in him alone.   Give me love for him above all else.   Amen.  Our Father…

Thursday Morning, Again, O Lord, I lift up my soul to You in prayer.  Since I trust in You, do not disappoint me.  Leave me not to my enemies or many sins, but in your salvation, include me too.   Include me in your work in the world.   Include me in your Church, which is the Body of your Son.   Amen.  Our Father…

Thursday Evening Lord God, I have a wayward heart, and I desire what I shouldn’t.   Things that are not good for me or pleasing to You.  Instruct my heart that I may keep your law.  Teach me to desire better things.   Things that are good to me and pleasing to You, for You desire my good.   Amen.  Our Father…

Friday Morning Lord Jesus Christ, on this day You were lifted up on the Cross.  Give me the eyes to look–in faith–on your crucifixion.  Though your suffering is hard to look-at.  Strengthen me to look at the harsh injuries that brought me healing.   Make me see that your death brought me life.  In the harshness of cross, make me strong to bear my own cross.   Amen.  Our Father…

Fridays Evening In the Name of the Lord, You came to Jerusalem.  In the invocation of your Name, your church worships You for You have promised to be where your Name is spoken.  Teach me to treasure the Name of the holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Make my mind eager for the gathering of your church who have been called by your Name.  Give me life until I hear that Name spoken in your congregation, until I hear it in the heavenly assembly.   Amen.  Our Father…

Into the Darkest Hour

It was a time like this,
War & tumult of war,
a horror in the air.
Hungry yawned the abyss-
and yet there came the star
and the child most wonderfully there.

It was time like this
of fear & lust for power,
license & greed and blight-
and yet the Prince of bliss
came into the darkest hour
in quiet & silent light.

And in a time like this
how celebrate his birth
when all things fall apart?
Ah! Wonderful it is
with no room on the earth
the stable is our heart.

Madeleine L’Engle, “Into the Darkest Hour”

Tractarians on Advent

The name Advent, which means Coming, is given to the four Sundays immediately before Christmas Day, the feast which celebrates our Lord’s coming in the flesh to suffer for us. This season, then, is set apart by the Church, in accordance with ancient and venerable usage, in the first place, to prepare the minds of her children, by holy meditation, for welcoming, with more devout and heartfelt joy, that great day, the day of Christ’s Nativity. But her services at this solemn time are also directed to another object, very closely connected with the former: viz. to lead our thoughts onward to that second coming of our Lord and Master “in His glorious Majesty to judge the quick and the dead,” which the Church is still expecting and anxiously looking for. These two subjects are very closely blended in the services of this season, as indeed there is much naturally to unite them in our thoughts and feelings; for the promise of Christ’s second coming to us, what the hope of His first coming was to the Jews. And therefore, while we go back in our thoughts to the time when Christ appeared in the flesh, and to the state of the Jewish Church at that time, we must apply all to the searching out of our own spirits, whether we are like holy Simeon and Anna, and the faithful few who “waited for redemption in Jerusalem,” or rather like the great mass of the people, who thought only of worldly and temporal things, and so rejected their King when he appeared among them.

– Benjamin Harrison, Tracts for the Times, no. 16

Consumerism is a restless spirit that is never content with any particular material thing. In this sense, consumerism has some affinities with Christian asceticism, which counsels a certain detachment from material things. The difference is that, in consumerism, detachment continually moves us from one product to another, whereas in Christian life, asceticism is a means to a greater attachment to God and to other people. We are consumers in the Eucharist, but in consuming the body of Christ we are transformed into the body of Christ, drawn into the divine life in communion with other people. We consume in the Eucharist, but we are thereby consumed by God.”

The Journey of the Church into the Dimension of the Kingdom

The liturgy of the Eucharist is best understood as a journey or procession. It is the journey of the Church into the dimension of the Kingdom. We use the word ‘dimension’ because it seems the best way to indicate the manner of our sacramental entrance into the risen life of Christ. Color transparencies ‘come alive’ when viewed in three dimensions instead of two. The presence of the added dimension allows us to see much better the actual reality of what has been photographed. In very much the same way, though of course any analogy is condemned to fail, our entrance into the presence of Christ is an entrance into a fourth dimension which allows us to see the ultimate reality of life. It is not an escape from the world, rather it is the arrival at a vantage point from which we can see more deeply into the reality of the world.”
